How To Play Five Card Draw Poker
1/12/2008
Five card draw is one of the easier poker games to learn, and the least played in casinos online or on land. Five card draw is one of the games to give rise to variations played in casinos though. Winning is not always as easy as playing the game, so there are some strategies and tips you should learn before playing the game for high stakes. For our purposes we are just going to look at how to play five card draw.

To begin the game you have to understand the card values. The card values will help you get the five card poker hand you need in order to win the game. If you don’t know the difference between a flush and a straight you need to learn. You also need to learn the values of the cards. For example an ace can be either high or low depending on how you need to play it. To win the game the player with the highest hand wins. If two players have a flush then the winner will be the higher value of cards. In other words if a flush is made with low numbered cards and the second flush is made with face cards, then the face cards win.

To begin five card draw the ante bet or starting bet must be played. The bet will be the same denomination for all players. A player cannot and should not raise the ante bet. Once the bet has been placed the dealer in a left to right motion must make sure all players get five cards.

For five card draw to continue each player has to state whether they will remain in the game by either folding or placing another bet. You can also raise the bet during this time if you wish. Once all players decide to either stay or go the dealer will open up the round of exchange. During this period a player may ask for none or all cards to be exchanged. You can also exchange one or a few of the cards. You don’t have to give all your cards up. You should keep only the cards that will make the best hand. This is where strategy can help. You need to know what cards to keep and what to get rid of based on the statistics of what card you might draw next. You must always exchange an even number of cards during this round.

Once all cards have been exchanged another round of betting begins. At this point the players left in the game will bet, fold or raise. The betting will continue until someone calls the other player ending the ability to raise the bet again or all players fold, but one. Of course every player could fold, but that defeats the purpose.

Normally the hand comes down to a couple of players and a call will have the cards shown to see who had the best hand. The best hand is determined by the value of the cards in each player’s hand.
